KFP Workshops for Katrina Survivors

Los Angeles, CA

2005

Alexandria and Selma Students created handmade unique artbooks, one of a kind coloring books and original games to send away to Katrina families. Many families wrote back  with  precious letters of gratitude and have started pen pal relationships with the students, of Alexandria and Selma.

Kids For Peace collaborated with the Hollywood Arts Council, Project SOAR, Barnsdall Arts/FOJAC, LA Best  and the Center For Jewish Culture and Creativity to work with students from Selma, Alexandria and Logan Elementary schools to reach out to displaced families from the Katrina disaster.

The Workshop at Logan Elementary was held with Ms. Chan’s fifth grade classroom. She had some of the kids who were actually displaced from Hurricane Katrina and currently living in Los Angeles at the Dream Center just adjecent to the school. Other Katrina survivors  attended the workshops visiting from other classrooms.

With the guidance of Gayle Gale and her assistant Dee Kirkwood

the students made artbooks/journals with the theme of “Home - My Story”.  One student shared some horrific stories of watching babies and loved ones die.  This workshop gave the opportunity for kids to express their inner feelings  and use the creative process as a means to heal.
